Opened in December 2023 the Hunua Traverse is a new point-to-point trail from Clevedon to Kaiaua. With five possible car parks along the route the total journey can be customised to a length of your choosing ranging from 11km - 44km. The majority of the trail follows the Watercare access roads connecting three of the reservoirs present in the Hunua ranges.

The trail is suitable for e-bikes, gravel bikes, mountain bikes and all forms of two foot travel.

While access is available 7 days a week, the Ōtau Mountain Road is closed during week days to allow forestry operations. During the week access can instead occur via the Ness Valley alternative route.
